Notice of Special Meeting Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at 6:30pm

The Fife Lake Area Planning Commission has scheduled a special meeting for Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at 6:30pm to finish review of the Fife Lake Area Master Plan and the Fife Lake Township Zoning Maps. The meeting will be held at the Fife Lake Township Office, 134 Morgan Street, Fife Lake, MI 49633.

NOTICE OF INTENT TO CREATE A JOINT MASTER PLAN BETWEEN FIFE LAKE TOWNSHIP AND THE VILLAGE OF FIFE LAKE

In accordance with the requirements of Michigan’s P.A. 33 of 2008 and related amendments, this is to notify stakeholders and the public that the Fife Lake Area Planning Commission, a joint Planning Commission of the Village of Fife Lake and Fife Lake Township, is initiating the process of developing a joint Master Plan for the Village and Township and welcomes your participation and comment. 

The Fife Lake Area Planning Commission (FLAPC) requests input from the public and stakeholders for the Fife Lake Area Master Plan. The FLAPC will hold at least one Public Hearing on the Master Plan amendments after completing the draft Master Plan with proper public notice.

Comments will be accepted during regular FLAPC meetings, held the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm at the Fife Lake Township Office, 134 Morgan Street, Fife Lake, MI 49633. Written comments may also be submitted: by e-mail (preferred method) to fifelakeplanningcommission@gmail.coml; or in writing to Fife Lake Township attn. Planning Commission, 134 Morgan Street, PO Box 87, Fife Lake, MI 49633.

A printed copy of the Master Plan is also available at the Fife Lake Township office or can be requested using the contact information above and below.

The FLAPC intends to post the draft Master Plan online at www.fifelaketwp.com/planning-commission/ and on its Google Drive at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1_bhssOPZ5hYqlSMALiai9OMFlNtbKoZr?usp=sharing. The FLAPC intends to send the draft Master Plan to stakeholders via electronic mail. Any entity or member of the public wishing to request a copy of the draft Master Plan may do so using the contact information above and below. If an entity or member of the public objects to the use of electronic mail, a printed copy may be requested at the contact information above and below.

The Township Planning Commission is appointed by the Township Board under the authority of the Township Planning Act, Public Act 168 of 1959 MCL 125.321, et seq.

The Township Board and Village Board created the Fife Lake Area Planning Commission by resolution and under the Township Zoning Act, Public Act 184 of 1943, MCL 127.271, et seq, the Township Board passed the powers, duties and responsibilities of the Zoning Board to the Planning Commission.

The Michigan Zoning Enabling Act, Public Act 110 of 2006 and Public Act 012 of 2008 repealed many of the former Acts, including 168 and 184 to provide updated working documents for Michigan Townships to utilize in their Planning and Zoning processes.

Membership of the Planning Commission consists of seven (7) members who are qualified township or village electors. One member of the five must also be a member of the elected Township Board. The Township Supervisor appoints the membership of the Planning Commission, with approval of the Township Board. The Township Supervisor may also remove members of the Planning Commission after a hearing, with approval of the Township Board.

Generally appointment terms to the Planning Commission are for a three year period in a staggered rotation so not all member’s terms are expiring within the same year. Members may receive compensation as set by the Township Board.

Members of the Planning Commission elect among themselves a Chairperson, Vice-Chair, and Secretary. These leadership appointments are for one year term, but can be renewed at the discretion of the Planning Commission membership.

The Planning Commission has a minimum of four (4) mandatory regular meetings per fiscal year per MCL 125.325. the Chairperson may call a special meeting by making a written request to the Secretary. All meetings must comply with the requirements of the Open Meetings Act.

The basic function of the Planning Commission is to make and adopt a plan for land use development within the Village and Township. The Commission must hold at least one (1) public hearing before it adopts any portion or amendment of a plan or ordinance. The final approval of any plan or ordinance created by the Planning Commission must be presented to the Township Board and/or Village Board for final approval.
